Obituary of Carmelo Fazio

Please share a memory of Carmelo to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carmelo Fazio of Waltham, MA and Long Island, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, April 2, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was 60. Born in Queens, NY, he lived there until he was 13 years old. His parents moved the family to Waltham, MA in the mid 70’s and he graduated from Waltham High School. He joined the United States Navy in March, 1981 and was stationed in Orlando, FL, Memphis, TN, and Meridian, MS during his time in the Navy. He was trained as an aviation jet mechanic. Returning to New York after the Navy, he worked for Pan American Airlines and then TWA Airlines at both Laguardia and JFK airports. He was married in 1990 and lived in Staten Island, NY for 21 years. He had three children and was extremely devoted to his family. His children were his pride and joy and he was so very proud of all their accomplishments. He moved back to Waltham in 2011 and lived there for 5 years before moving to Denver, CO and Tulsa, OK to work for American Airlines. During his time back in Waltham, Carmelo loved being around his nieces and nephews and is lovingly known as “Uncle Meme”. He attended every dance recital, soccer game, school play and music concert, no matter how “squeaky” it was. He gave advice and life lessons the way that only Uncle Meme could…funny, silly but with a serious message. He would often be heard yelling across the room “read a book” when he thought they had watched enough television. When you encountered Carmelo, the one thing you could count on, was finding a cup of coffee in his hands at any time of the day. In the last 3 years, Carmelo lived with his cousins Aldo and Adele in NY as he began his cancer journey. His extended family has always been more like immediate family…cousins were not cousins, but rather brothers and sisters. He loved them one and all. Carmelo was predeceased by his loving brother, Antonio in 1999 and his father, Giuseppe in 2002. He is survived by his children Joseph, Anthony and Angela Fazio. His mother, Maria Fazio, his sister Giovanna Abeiga (and brother-in-law Ricardo), his sister-in-law Deborah Fazio, his cousin Giuliana Detto (and brother-in-law Frank). His cherished nieces and nephews, Elana, Gregory, Marco, and Davin Fazio, Vittoria, Isabella, Ricardo and Matteo Abeiga, and Daniel, Dominic and Olivia Detto. He is also survived by many aunts and cousins. Family and friends are welcome to gather and celebrate Carmelo’s life and remember the love and friendship he shared with others at a visitation at Towers Funeral Home, 2681 South Long Beach Road, Oceanside, NY on Wednesday, April 5th from 4:00-8:00 pm.
