Christopher Lugo class of 2001
I want to thank you for showing me the way when I was a young teenager . You took me under your wing in a class called military science for kids who just didn’t have it . From the day we met you kept pushing me and showed me the way . The following year you said Chris you have what it takes to be a RAIDER . I want you to train and show us what you got . I gave it all I had and you made become something I never thought I could be . I thank you so much because of that . I still remember all of those amazing memories because of you . You will always be my 1SGt . God bless you and thank you again rest in peace

1SG “My Army Dad”,
I remember the very first time that I met you at Raider orientation in “1996”. I felt inspired by your words of commitment to shape us into who we were meant to be.
That commitment never changed. You pushed me to be the best version of me. I will forever be grateful for your dedication, love, and support. You were proactive in guiding me and showed me how things get done in life.
You stood by me while I signed up for the boys cross country team as the only girl in the team, -then you dragged Diana right behind me.
You walked with me to sign up for the track team knowing that I was not confident in running short distances. You signed me up for a Tri-State athlete competition, and that worked out well too.
You taught me how to properly pull a tick off my arm at summer camp, and even that has come in handy!
You drove by me during summer camp pick up and when you realized that my ride wasn’t coming, you grabbed my big six flags Tweety Bird stuffed animal, a few huge trophies, and my duffle bag and drove me home.
You drove me and a few other “knuckleheads” to Hofstra for a college visit so that we could see what it was all about.
You mentored me every chance you had. You asked about my life’s hopes and dreams. You made time. Time that I knew you didn’t really have, but you made it.
You taught me how to take care of a huge tank of fish. You said it was my job to feed and to check on the fish until I graduated. I probably didn’t miss a day in high school knowing those fish needed to be fed.
When you heard that I wasn’t going to the ball, you had a classmate invite me simply so that I could show up to a commitment.
You read my college admission essays. You attended my Hofstra Graduation in person. You gave my husband Danny his 1st salute at his commissioning ceremony. You gave my brother in law Richie his 1st salute.
You were one of the important people mentioned in my dissertation. When I asked if you read the dedication page, you told me that you read the whole thing. You watched my Ph.D graduation virtually and admired the funny hat.
You were one of the names on my American Cancer Society Jersey as inspiration and motivation to run the NYC Marathon. On mile 18, I started to focus on everything you taught me about pushing through tough things in life. I definitely didn’t win that!!
You checked on me when Danny was deployed, each and every time. You checked on me after my mom passed away from Cancer. You checked on me when my father had heart surgery. You checked on me after you found out we had little ones. You were a support through the good and the bad.
Danny, the boys, and I recently watched McFarland USA and we told the boys that you were Coach White times 100.
1SG, Army Dad, you will forever be part of my life story, our story. Thank you for stepping up to be a Dad in my life. You cultivated an example of a lifetime of service and patriotism. It was a privilege and an honor. May you rest in peace.
Donna, Rich, Brian, and Christopher thank you for all of those years of sacrificing late nights, weekends, summer camp weeks without 1SG. I know that most military families expect their service member to be away from their families, so I thank you for your continued support past his 1st retirement. 1SG’s commitment and sacrifice has had an immeasurable impact on my life, my husband’s life, and thousands of lives. Our deepest condolences to the Gogarty family. His legacy will live on.
With love,
Johanna “Rivero” Gomez (Johi)
