Soon after we moved into the neighborhood our 8 year-old son, John and Joe's son, Joey became fast friends. Joe was a big part of my son's life since he spent quite a bit of time in the DeMaio household. John loved working with his hands and as a kid was in awe of Joe DeMaio's woodworking talent. In fact, we all were. One of my biggest regrets was not asking him to try to restore an inlay jewelry box my grandfather had given me over 65 years ago. I didn't want to impose but I'm sure he would have done it - and beautifully, too!
No matter how many days, weeks or months passed we were always greeted with a big smile and robust hello. Conversations were picked up as though we just saw each other only a few hours before. Joe will certainly be missed.
Until we meet again, Joe, rest easy .....
