Obituary of Nicholas Metakis
Please share a memory of Nicholas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Nicholas (Nick) George Metakis, age 70, died peacefully surrounded by family on November 23. He is survived by his cherished daughter Nicole Metakis Formont, son-in-law Nicholas whom he loved as a son and beloved granddaughters Julia and Zoe who brought him immense joy, all of Oceanside, NY; nephews Marc and Jason Metakis of New York, NY long-term friend and former wife Susan Metakis of Hicksville, NY and large extended family who loved Nick as a brother. John Metakis, his older brother of Brookline, MA, predeceased him by fifteen years. Nick was authentic, had a magnetic personality and possessed a deep sense of humor. He had a knack for making people feel special, often through a pet name affectionately emphasizing an endearing quality. He was also strong-willed, independent, and hardworking, pushing himself even through physical setbacks. The single most important thing in the world to Nick, however, was his family – immediate and extended. He was a proud father and grandfather. His parents Julia and George Metakis instilled his ‘family first’ focus by bringing extended family together to stay at their home in Bayville, NY each summer.
Nick was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, moved to Bayville, NY in his teens, and was a long-time resident of that village. He worked for many years in the oil delivery industry and more recently, as a cement mixing operator. Wake and funeral service will be at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, 110 Cathedral Avenue, Hempstead, NY 11550 on Tuesday, November 29. Wake - 9:30-11:00 am; Funeral Service - 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org).
