Samuel Melton Thompson 3rd Samuel Melton Thompson 3rd, age 79, of Baldwin, passed away on November 24 after a lengthy battle with pneumonia. Samuel was born on November 5,1943, to Bessie and Samuel Melton Thompson, Jr., in Harlem Hospital. After Woodrow Wilson High School he went on to serve the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Infantry Division stationed in Korea. He went on to become an auto mechanic with the Avis corporation. He loved it and would end up staying with Avis for twenty years. After retiring from Avis Samuel joined the New York City Department of Education where he worked for another 18 years. Finally, Samuel continued to serve in public education as a security aide for the Baldwin School District. During Samuel’s time at Avis he met and fell in love with Dorothea and her son, Joseph Flippo. They were married in 1970 and were with each other through all of life's ups and downs for 52 blissful years. Samuel and Dorothea would go on to have Patreece, Samuel the Fourth, and Nia. Samuel was a wonderful and devoted father, husband and teacher. He always taught us to enjoy life, never take things too seriously, and care about people. He supported us all throughout the many accomplishments and difficulties of our lives. When Samuel wasn't working hard to support his family in Baldwin, he could be found with various collectibles including his CB radio and rare reptiles. He also enjoyed time as a volunteer as Head Coach of the undefeated Baldwin Bombers football team as well as the Baldwin Cycle and Avis Bicycle Motocross Teams and was an influential mentor to many men. Samuel was predeceased by his brother Harold. He is survived by his sister Catherine Alvarez, his children Joseph, Patreece, Samuel the Fourth and Nia and grandchildren Ryleigh, Sammy, Natalie, and Nicole.
