Obituary of Thomas Frederick Haughey

On Friday, July 29th, 2022, Tom Haughey, loving husband, father, and brother, passed away at the age of 84. Tom had a full and dynamic life. He received a degree in English Literature from Catholic University before changing paths towards the new world of computers and information technology at IBM, which took him all around the world. Tom was drafted, served in the 82nd Airborne Division, selected for officer training, and achieved the rank of second lieutenant. Later, he trailblazed a path in data modeling, for which he received international renown. Tom married Helene Lee in 1983 and raised two children, Tommy and Katie. Tom dove passionately into every interest and activity that he pursued. He was a decorated runner, achieving 3rd place in the Boston Marathon Senior Division in 1978. His running achievements also included carrying the torch for the 1976 Olympics. Tom was an avid skier, dancer, and fisherman. He enjoyed all sports, especially with his children. His passion was contagious, spreading joy to family, old friends, and new friends, which he made easily. Tom loved mentoring and teaching anyone who shared his thrill for challenges and adventure. Tom will be laid to rest at St. Charles Cemetery surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Helene, his two children Tommy and Katie, his grandson Theo, his sister Arlene, and many supportive cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Everyone touched by his life is welcome to a visitation held on Friday, August 5th, 2022, at Towers Funeral Home in Oceanside, NY from 2-6PM.
