Madge G. Medford March 22, 1932 - April 27, 2022 Madge Medford (nee Edwards), 90, of Oceanside, NY died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. Madge came from humble beginnings -- the first and only daughter of 6 children, she grew up in the small village of Mt. Moritz on the Caribbean Island of Grenada. She left Grenada in 1957 for NYC to make a better life for herself, leaving behind her brothers and her young daughter Zandrine to be raised by her mother. In NYC, she reunited with other family members whom already left Grenada. One of them was her husband-to-be, Keverne Medford. She and her husband Kev first settled in Brooklyn, NY, gave birth to their daughter Irene, and later moved to Oceanside, NY in 1970. Two years later her daughter Zandrine emigrated to NY to live with the three of them. She enjoyed the domestic chores of family life taking great pride keeping her home neat and tidy. Madge could make a bed with perfection. She baked bread and marinated raisons for her Christmas fruit cake, and delighted in items of whimsy - string lights and ornaments for Christmas, solar lights and pinwheels for her garden. Everyday was a holiday for Madge. Like most women in the 1970’s, Madge entered the workforce as the lunch lady at her daughter’s grade school, Oak School 3 in Oceanside, NY. Then she worked at TSS in the shoe and candy department. Later she worked in the pharmacy at Genovese that eventually turned into Rite Aid in Oceanside. She was widowed at 65, and retired from Rite Aid at age 78. Someone once described Madge as, “sharp as a tack, and funny as heck”. Madge was a spunky little lady with a twinkle in her eye and a fire in her belly. She had a big, generous heart and enjoyed reminiscing about the good old days “back home” in Grenada. She was the ultimate hostess. We often gathered around her dining room table drinking tea and eating cake, as she spun stories punctuated by her infectious laugh. She doted on her loved ones always asking if they were hungry or cold. Madge was uplifting often consoling others with her words of wisdom. She knew how to cheer someone up. In later years, she’d watch Fox News diligently with a patriotic spirit. She lived her life to the fullest, recently celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by family and friends. True to her nature, she was wise enough to know when to stop fighting, and gracefully departed this world where she is reunited with her husband. Hopefully she is looking down admiring the spring flowers and blooming cherry trees that she loved so dearly, but could not be near. Madge is survived by her brothers Hermon and Frank, her children Zandrine and Irene, and her son-in-law, Tom, as well as many other beloved members of her large family.
