Growing in the Durand household gave me many opportunities to see Peter as a little kid. I really didn’t know him well as an adult but the Durand family played a huge part of my childhood. I am sorry for your loss and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Words fail to express my deep sorrow for our loss. Peter was my best friend, and the Durand family was such a big part of my childhood. I have a thousand stories of my time with Peter Durand, but I have narrowed it down to two. The day I formally met Peter and the greatest time I ever had with him. Peter and I met on the playground of school 1 in 6th grade. It was morning and Ms. Siegel was calling over her megaphone for all students to line up "line up has been called". I raced to my spot and at the same time, Peter and I bumped into each other. It didn't take much back then for me to fight, but little did I know who I was about to tangle with. Peter and I went toe to toe on that playground and in the end, I was just another notch on Peter's Champion belt, I fell victim to the Doomsday. After that, we became great friends.
My second story (my greatest time with Peter Durand) started in San Diego, California. There were several of the crew that moved out to California (Eddie, Peter, Danny, Kevin, and myself); but in the end, Peter and I were the last two. We finally decided to move back to New York, but we were going to take a 3-week "epic" cross-country road trip. Our first stop was the Grand Canyon. We had planned to spend one day there, and we both joked about how long does it take to look at a big hole in the ground? We made it to the Grand Canyon, but it was late. The Park Ranger was mad at us but showed us the way to our campsite. It was pitch black when Peter and I pulled out the 2 man pop tent that we bought for $20.00 from K-mart.
We managed to put it together and hopped in for the night. We got up the next morning to the rise of the sun. We unzipped the tent and crawled out. We were both amazed that we were just steps away from the edge of the Grand Canyon. It's hard to put into words what Peter and I were feeling at that moment. Two dopey kids from Long Island watching this amazing sunrise over the most magnificent sight we had ever seen. It was breathtaking. Our plans changed at that moment from spending a day looking "at a hole in the ground" to 3 days of barbequing, beer-drinking, listening to the Doors, and smoking California's finest. Peter and I spent each day enjoying each other's company and watching sunsets at the edge of the Grand Cayon. Amazing!!!!!
As I write this, I am listening to Patsy Cline's Crazy which Peter turned me on to. Peter, I will miss you very much.....

I was sad to learn of Peter's passing. He and I work together at The NY Marriott Marquis. He was always so enthusiastic about his work in the kitchen. He was and excellent chef who care for his people.
His rough exterior with and enormous heart will be missed. R.I.P. Peter our friend
Sincerely Mike Stengel
