An Obituary for Lucia Theresa Abate
Lucia Theresa Abate was born on Lorimer Street in Brooklyn, New York on December 13, 1921. She was the fifth of six children born to Pietro and Giulia Adamo. Lucia spent many wonderful and happy years growing up on Lorimer Street with her family which she often reminisced about. It was in Brooklyn where she met her true love Paul Abate, who she married on April 16, 1944. Together, they lived in Brooklyn with their three children Peter Paul, Vincent and Angela. In 1954 they bought a home in Oceanside, New York, where they moved to raise their three children. Lucia and Paul spent many years traveling both alone and with their family. She had untiring love, support and devotion to her beloved husband Paul, who passed in August 2001. Though the years, Lucia’s home was a gathering place for her ever-growing family. Her three children, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild where always central and most important to her.
Lucia was an active member in St. Anthony’s church in Oceanside. She spent many years teaching confraternity and was a long-time member of the Rosary Society. Lucia was also active in the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Sons of Italy Ladies Auxiliary.
Lucia was a model caregiver, loving parent and grandmother. She had a passion for fashion and traveling and wonderful sense of humor which remained with her still at 99 years old. To those who knew her well she was a model of spiritual faith. Her strong determination and resolve to triumph over life’s adversities was inspiring.
