Ross Hoffman was a friend and a brother. He will always be remembered with great respect and affection. He had a golden sense of humor and kindness. Ross will be greatly missed by his many friends and his extended family of both the Department of Buildings Office of Internal Affairs and Discipline and the Office of the Buildings Marshal, and his colleagues of the Department of Investigation. God rest his good soul.

I am so thankful to have known and worked with Ross. He was an endlessly supportive colleague, always ready to share expertise or a laugh. We worked together on something in which I was a little nervous and brand new to the game. Ross kept me steady. I learned from him, and I leaned on his confidence. He will be dearly, dearly missed. - Amber (DOB)

I have worked closely with Ross over the past year and a half in my capacity as a prosecutor at the Kings County DA’s Office. I have worked with so many detectives and investigators over the past 20 plus years and Ross was truly the absolute best!!!! From the moment i met him, he impressed me with his impeccable ability to follow up on every lead, his intelligence and his passion for the work he was doing. Not only did he become an indispensable part of my ability to prosecute construction cases in Brooklyn but he also became a great friend. I will miss him forever but will cherish the memories and am so glad that I was able to work with him and get to know him. Rest in peace Ross. You will be so missed.

I was lucky to know Ross when he worked with the NYC Department of Buildings and later became his friend when he transferred to the NYC Department of Investigation. I worked closely with Ross for the past three years responding to construction incidents, conducting investigations and successfully bringing cases for prosecution . Ross was a rising star in our squad, he was wise beyond his years. Ross would mentor new and senior investigators, never afraid to share his knowledge of the construction industry. Ross also shared with us his personal side, he was kind, he was friends with everyone and had an incredible sense of humor. Office days were always easier when Ross was there. I am sad to lose a friend and colleague, but thankful he came into our lives. I will never forget what he taught me; rest in peace brother. - Rob Miller

I have known Ross since he was a kid. I remember him and his brother playing in their grandparents backyard. They would play ball and sometimes you could hear his Papa yell at him to stop digging holes in the yard. I watched Ross graduate high school and grow into a man. I connected Ross with the Electrician's Union and it wasn't long before his boss called to thank me for recommending him and did I have anymore like him? Ross worked hard with a "can-do" attitude and a desire to learn. Ross was a young man who left us too soon. As Billy Joel sung "Only the Good Die Young". I miss him terribly.

I also started at Buildings in a cohort of inspectors-in-training with Ross. He was among the youngest in our class, but carried himself with the wisdom and self-assurance of someone older. I was always deeply impressed by how he never bogged himself down with the small stuff, and always kept his focus on the horizon to whatever the next right action in any given situation was. He was both confident and humble, always teachable, and always open-minded. I recall many phone calls in our first summer in the field. Sometimes it was to untangle a code question, but often it was just to say "hey, I'm thinking of you, how are you doing out there?". When we were new inspectors a seasoned guy once told us that the job was fun but terribly isolating. Ross seemed intuitively driven to keep us out of isolation from each other. It is when I consider this particular gift of his presence in my life that I am most devastated to think of not seeing or hearing from him again. I'm a better, more empathetic person as a result of connecting with Ross as a friend and colleague. Wishing all of us who loved him the very best in getting through this tough time.

Ross and i started working for the NYC Department of Buildings 8 years ago. He always said when we were in training keep notes and when your out on the job keep a diary. He moved on to IAD and Investigation. Ross used to pass me in the mornings on the Belt Parkway service road. Roll Down his window and say good morning don't be late smile and pull away. That's when he was with IAD. One morning when he became an investigator. Lights flashing he pulled me over, laughing like crazy, he got me. I missed him when he moved to another section of Buildings. Thomas Sorento. Charles John, Lori Bingel, Philip DiMaggio, Lymroy Prince, James Schiavo. Damien Moses, Jorge Trejo. We all started with him. RIP Ross.

I am in shock and so very saddened. I worked with Ross. We started at the NYC Department of Buildings at the same time. Went through the academy together. He was just a big teddy bear. Always smiling and funny. We became good friends and I will miss him terribly.
